Question So who lists in the Yahoo Directory?

Its a question that crops up reguarly on different forums, so I wonder what the response will be here...

Business Directories (My Local Services included) have had to change and adapt over the last couple of years, and the days of monthly or even annual subscriptions are starting to wain.

But good old Yahoo still charges $300 per entry per year, and that is a non refundable review fee, which doesn't automatically mean you will be accepted and listed!

I wonder with the recent goings on between MS and Yahoo if this model will change?

Me personally, although expensive when you have to list an number of sites, I do think its worth it, and I have seen an increase in Yahoo traffic since we got listed, but it would be nice to see them adopt a "Lifetime Listing" approach!

What does anyone else think?

Many website rank well without a yahoo listing but the general opinion is that google may add extra kudos to a site that is listed in yahoo - the thought process is that if you can spend $299 a year to be in a directory and that directory will not just accept you because you have paid the $299 then if you are accepted it is like a vote of confidence to google.

There are a few other directories that hold some weight also (allegedly)

I wonder if that will change now that Yahoo is in bed with Bing?

Never had any success getting many pages indexed or getting much traffic from MSN//Live/Bing so hoping they dont interfere too much with Yahoo.

Default $300?

Excuse me for asking a daft question, but you have to pay Yahoo $300 for them to list you on their search engine?

I was led to believe that the big search engines listed all websites automatically and there was no need any more to have to pay people to submit your websites? Or do you mean like a sponsored type listing? Like the Google adverts?

I do not list my site on Yahoo directory but will consider it if they are going to charge a one-off payment plan or make it available for free :P

Paula you are correct you do not have to pay to go into any of the major search engines.

Many many sites do well without ever going into the yahoo directory.

The Yahoo Directory is different from their normal search results. Its a manually approved directory that (supposedly) puts you in good stead with the likes of Google, who reconise its value (or used to!).

You dont have to pay to get your website listed with the major search engines.

Never paid a penny to yahoo, yet 'Web Design Coalville' and 'Graphic Design Coalville' both show my site on the front page, seems once again, I have come out smelling of roses!

(edit) And Graphic Design Coalville on Bing brings up my listing on My Local Services! Front page! Woohoo! Cheers Steve!

Only too happy to oblige good sir

Your also page 1 of Google
Graphic Designers Coalville

Paula - Ref your question, the Yahoo Directory is a separate Directory they have which is paid inclusion. You supposedly pay a non refundable review fee, and if they deem your site worthy, you get included into the Yahoo Directory. It is said (or was) to carry a lot of weight with the likes of Google, the theory being, spammers wouldn't pay to list their sites, and as its human approved, the directory acts as a reference for other search engines.

Its importance is in question since the recent deals with Microsoft (Bing), and it is separate from the normal Yahoo Search results.
