Music on a website - thoughts please

I have a new website, it's only a little one I have created for myself and my new salsa class. A couple of the other salsa clubs have background music to their websites.... what do you all think? Good or bad idea? I find it irritates me personally, but it's not me that I need to impress.

Depends - I have been looking at the video presenter for a clients site and some pointed out to me that a large amount of computers do not have speakers that are in operation.

For me it would not put me off because music is important to what you are trying to sell, but would expect to see a button to switch it off though.

Have you thought about a youtube video instead showing the classes?

Well, my class only starts this coming Monday, but when the numbers are a little bigger I think I might just do that

Its good for setting the ambience, but make sure it is not auto enabled, someone sitting at work pops on, only to announce to the rest of the office they are messing around online!

I am sure there are more valid reasons, but that one I know only too well!

Personally i dont like it, but i do spend most of my time with the sound switched off on my laptop anyway.

It is a distraction (when the sound is switched on) if you are working away & then suddenly you click on a page & then get a fanfair blasting away even if you are legitimately working, even worse as Kip says if you are taking a break for 5 mins & a bit of surfing, not that i do that of course

Not a fan myself, as already said, definitely don't have it on auto play.

I think it can really cheapen a site, and the majority of laptops or PC's with builtin speakers, the sound is terrible and tinny which makes it sound worse and probably doesn't convey the impression you wanted. I liken it to 1990's scrolling text and rotating "email me"

Could you have a music tracks download of example music, or an online playlist so someone who is unsure of the style of music can get a taste for it, by selecting a sample track.

Agree with Tomsk, for something like a salsa class, wouldn't video be a better medium, letting a visitor see and hear the style of music and dance?

I detest it, it's so intrusive when you're seeking something information and the music or talking kicks in. There's a website I have to visit regularly to log in to the account and there is a video which kicks in talking and it drives me nuts every time, especially as I sometimes have to log out to log back in to another account there, but I dont want my sound off as I have some audible alerts on the computer which I need to hear if they jingle so turning sound off isn't an option. I simply wouldnt go there if I didnt have to.

Thanks guys, good points there. I think thats decided then, no background music but perhaps some links to vids or mp3 tracks if perople do want to listen.

PS Had my first class tonight... I got 4 people... woo hooo

I am so chuffed as that's the exact amount of people I needed so I didn't make a loss on the room

Well, my flyers have now turned up for m Salsa for Charity... so hopefully that will drum up interest for the actual classes too
