Default What do you think?

Hello all, I've been online since January 2010 and have been slowly but surely filling the database with goods!! It's been a long and bumpy road, with lots of back tracking!!!

But if you wouldn't mind I would like to hear some feedback from you pros out there! Feel free to give me criticism but don't forget the praise too!!! Ha ha!

I look forward to your comments!

Cheers Chris!

Chris,

Well, where to start... ...fortune favours the brave :-)

A whole heap of queries but I'll start off with a few basics (so that I don't depress you) and see where is leads. It's good to have a website and congrats on starting...

Appearance
This tends to be subjective, as different people like different things but if you get a consensus across numerous opinions then you know what looks good (or not). From my perspective, the menu (categories) colours (blue, green, red) as you click through rather clash.

The font in the welcome line doesn't seem right and again, the red "Summer Special Offer" colour is too much for my eyes!

Naviagation
I found no dead links so that's good.

Who are you? Have you considered an "about us" page? You have a shop as well, so tell us a bit about yourself/shop and put a picture of it up. A physical presence is always a positive aspect.

Search Engines
Daft question - but what's your target market? (actually it's a good question!)

From your domain name, you would not suspect (well I wouldn't) that you sell, camcorders, Headphones, Plasma/LCD TV Stands & Brackets, Speakers & Sound Systems, novelty gifts, party packs, zippo lighters, mugs, wetsuit, BBQ gear and whole lot of other items, not associated with Toys, Games or Gadgets. It's like a mini-Tesco's without the food

From a search engine ranking point of view I think you need to decide who you want to target and focus on that particular area.

I would suggest you install google analytics and see what keywords are bringing people to your site and progress from their. Or if it's not the keywords you expected then maybe you need to rethink your content.

There's a whole lot more that could be done to improve your SEO but let's leave that there for now. We can always delve further if you want....

Hope that's not too painful

Hi Chris

Love the domain name, 3 top keywords in 1 URL Also love the logo.

But agree with mrb about the colour scheme and fonts, not my cup of tea.

A site I visit every xmas and end up spending a couple of hundred quid is firebox.com

Their menu structure is obvious, (like yours) 9 times out of 10 they deliver on time and a feature I love, which is great for the lazy shopper is the "gift finder. Bang on the home page, add your budget and let them show you suggestions. I dunno how sophisticated your ecommerce engine is, but thats a great feature for people who have no idea what to get.

Again, agree with Martin about the "about us" page. It also give you a chance to get some good keyword phrases in there and add some text content. You have a shop, so shout about it, "come and see us instore" "try before you buy" type stuff. Most gadet eccommerce sites are just online drop shippers, so you have an edge.

You've got 1 review that I can see. Reviews and testimonials inspire trust and sell, so big it up and get plenty more.

Comparing the likes of firebox, gadgets.co.uk and gadgetshop.com, your home page looks a little dated. These may be big boys, but online, you can compete. Not had much experience with eccomerce packages, do you have the ability to change the skin or get a designer to put a new front end on? Prob wouldn't take much, make it a bit more web 2.0 and sexy

Right time for my medication...

Hi thanks for the input guys, it is most appreciated indeed, the website was a free download that was 'tweaked' by a friend who added the Paypal cart etc but only cost me £300 to get to where it is now from scratch, plus lots of elbow grease from me adding products etc! So I haven't spent as much as some people have, but in my eyes it's enough!!

I do totally agree with the 'look' it's not sleek and sexy as I would have liked, but in reality I haven't got much money to chuck at it! It has to start earning it's keep to get a facelift! Once I've done some link building etc and added myself to directories and started to get some decent traffic through then maybe I will!!

Although there are things I can do personally such as the homepage welcome text and a few bits and pieces but I wouldn't like to delve into it too far and mess it all up! But my friend who tweeked it, i don't think he has the technical knowledge to take it any further than it is already, as we have tried to get the SSL working which is all installed but he cannot get it working with the website itself! But the main thing is card transactions are handled by Paypal which are secure anyway!

In the shop I have all those bits that I advertise on the site, from mugs to lighters I do a bit of everything really, so you could say I'm a bit of a gift shop. But i would definitely lean towards toys and gadgets as that's where the money is really, games and games consoles don't have the margins be sustainable unless i bought in bulk, which won't be happening anytime soon!
