Default Being self employed can kill ya well nearly

I m back after my short time in Hosiptal due to sudden chest pains and a very numb arm and shoulder (felt strange as I m only 37 and being a ex firefighter etc I consider myself fit). At first I thought I had just over stressed my body working but my job really is not that stressful on my body. So I popped a couple of pain killers and carried on, then it got worse and worse to the point I was hardly standing. So off to the Hospital I went (no blues and twos), even then I still beleive I did not want to waste their time... to arrive and be plugged into a ECG and whisked off to different rooms with different people coming back and forth etc.. after many many hours and some pain , I was admited and given pills etc and bed rest..

The end result was a major strain on my chest due to a cold I had and would not give in to as I was self employed and work is work ... and my body just gave up.. and gave me a kick up the **** to stop..

So I m back home resting and taking it easy.. mmm sort of ....

So remember the moral of this story, work is work but your health is more important so take note of what you body says before its too late

Blimey, chest pains and numb arm I would have been flapping about a heart attack!!

Tis a very good point though, the days of pulling a sickie disappear when your getting a business off the ground, but your right you need to look after yourself.

Hope you're back on your feet soon

A few months ago my son got sudden chest pains. As a 23yr old he had (of course, as they do!) been lying in bed all morning doing zero, and they just came on and it was a crushing type of pain.

He called me up and I suggested painkillers which didnt work, so we hopped over to A&E and the doc said it must be something "muscular skeletal" (she coudlnt be any more specific) and sent him away with nothing.

You just never can tell when something might be serious or not and when you pay your taxes, dont think twice about your health and wasting their time. It could be the wrong decision one day. And if you end up with an ambulance driver who decides to stick to his tea break..... well.....

My son had had an operation just 1 week before which caused excessive bleeding afterwarads, so we had that to consider as well which is why he got seen to quite quickly once we got there as he looked like he'd done ten rounds with Mike Tyson anyway, what with all the bruising and swelling on his face. But none the less, I guess the docs know what to look for, and he just didnt show any of the more serious signs, so to have stuck you on ecg, etc, you must have been reasonably poorly even if it didnt turn out to be serious.

This years flu virus is knocking everyone for six and seems to be hitting the respiratory system particularly hard .
My 19 yr old daughter recently spent a week in hospital on constant oxygen and nebuliser for low oxygen levels in her blood.
They initially thought she had a pulmonary embolism but eventually put it down to a chest infection.
4 courses of anti biotics and 3 weeks of high dose steroids and she is only just starting to show signs of improvement.
We have all been totally floored by asthma/chest infection flu like symptoms for weeks and doctor wont even see us, just wrote a prescription for steroids.
Marc and myself both had the flu jab back in October but they seem to have failed with vaccine against this years strain.
All i will say is if you are unfortunate enough to start to show symptoms, do yourself and everyone else a favour and look after number 1.
Yeah we all like to soldier on regardless but all your doing is passing it on to everyone else, its just one big viscious circle.
Poor little grandaughter is on her second bout of it at 20 months old, she was ill when daughter was in hossy and has now caught it again from her daddy.

One of my key staff was taken into hospital over Christmas, and the story is identical to Trena's above. She is asthmatic, and is therefore hit a lot harder when she catches a chest infection. I'm not expecting to see her back for a good few weeks.

I must say all the above posts are very worrying. I have been so fortunate so far with my health, maybe 1 day off sick in over 30 years (I'm touching wood here), but you never know what's round the corner.

I wish you all a Healthy 2011.

Good to hear that you're on the road to recovery, and that you've had lots of enquiries.

However, don't overdo it, take heed of the words of your moral to your story.
