Default Plastic glasses?

Yes, I know it's an oxymoron!

But, what is that I heard on the news about pubs having to serve us our drinks in plastic bottles and glasses? The beer will taste awful. It's bad enough at gigs.

What a load of old cobblers!!

"Alcohol should be served far more often in plastic glasses and bottles to reduce the injury toll from violent attacks, says a researcher.

Dr Alasdair Forsyth, from the Glasgow Centre for the Study of Violence, told a conference that the use of glass as a weapon could be eliminated."
BBC News - Fresh call for alcohol glass ban

Dr Forsyth needs to extend his research past Glasgow, don't have too many people chucking Buckfast bottles at each other down here

Maybe it's just the sheltered life I've led, but while I've seen a handful of bar fights I've never actually seen anyone attempt to use a glass as a weapon. Glass-related injuries while drunk, certainly, but that's not the same thing.

I can see the point of plastic cups for festivals and events where people leave their empties on the ground, forget to take them with them, and loads of people are wandering about not watching where they step. But again, that's not weaponry.

If you were going to remove everything that *might* be a weapon from a bar, you'd have to lose all the stools, fire extinguishers, darts, pool cues, and depending on the bar between 10% and 80% of the clientele.

Although part of me is wondering if there actually is a bar somewhere designed along Wacky Warehouse lines. That could be fun.

Default Nanny State?????

Do we really need any more bloody nannying? I'm sick to death of this constant assumption that our beloved leaders, Health and Safety, censorship boards and the police know better than us and that we all need babying, coddling, disarming, and generally protecting to avoid self harm through our stupidity and immaturity. I'm at an age now where policemen look like kids to me but I've managed to retain mosty of my marbles and survive, thank you very much, so far all the dangers and pitfalls life throws at us. I believe these minor chalenges and how to overcome them are called "LIVING"!!!!!!! Cotton wool blanketing is stifling, ever increasing legislation an insult to our intelligence and a limiting factor in our development. Rant over ..... I'm off to juggle some chainsaws... anyone wanna join me?
ps don't tell nanny

Shotan's lightning fast reflexes, (honed through 50 years of bar room brawling!!!) kick in, he dodges the murderous assault, some other poor innocent sucker cops it on the noggin and Shotan lives to engrave yet another survival point on his headboard at the Old Coffin Dodgers Rest Home. Hi guys,

Sorry to buck the trend here, but I actually agree with the plastic drink vessels suggestion.

It's not the beer glasses that are a problem - if you try to turn one of them into a weapon, they pretty much disintegrate in your hand. It's the bottles... Hold a bottle by its neck, smack it hard against the edge of a table, and you will be left holding the neck of the bottle with several knife-sharp blades of glass projecting from it.

It has been trendy for years to drink beer straight from the bottle, rather than first pouring into a glass, so there are a lot of bottles/potential weapons in the hands of a lot of drinkers in every pub.

What's the problem with putting beer into plastic bottles? Coke and Pepsi did it with their products years ago.

Juggling chainsaws looks like fun. Saw it in Edinburgh a couple of years ago. Banning beer glasses is one thing but what's next? Will we be making drinkers remove their eye glasses and leave them at the pub door, just in case someone decides to pop a lens out and use it as an offensive weapon.

While we're at it, why don't we ban pens and pencils - I'm sure they are the reason why I can't spell!

And what about cutlery - a major aid to obesity.

Dave

Luckily I drink spirits, the first time I get an Old Fashioned in a plastic tumbler, will be enough to ensure I never drink there again!
