Default Car repairs

At what point do you think - no it's just not worth it.

If you've a car that's worth £2000 and needs £2000 worth of repairs would you go ahead with the repairs?

On the basis that you could buy another car for that amount of money would it be better to buy another car? However, the same thing could happen with that car.

So, perhaps it's best to get the repair done and then at least you know that part should be ok!?

...or just forget the whole lot and participate in the fun that is public transport.

Tough one matey

£2k's a lot of repairs, and if the motors only worth £2k, could it be that more bills are around the corner??

Considered maybe a lease? Less hassle, fixed monthly fee, and if it breaks, someone else fixes it, taxes and puts tyres on it.

Obviously tax is a pain, but depends on what kind of car, can get some low cost super duper 500 miles to the gallon with no emmissions which shouldn't be much of a loading.

Yes, poignant post

My car was in for service and MOT yesterday. The garage phoned me to say that they recommended replacing front brake pads & discs, now up to £650.00

In addition, it needed work that would cost over £1200.00. I asked "Would that not be covered by my Extended Warranty?" Finally, I heard back that it would.
Boy, am I glad I decided to take that out a year ago

That's a result then, but with an old car you know the problems its going to give you and unless you buy new theres always problems, and you lost money immediately you buy a new car?

So maybe a repair would be best.

Cars, repairs, MOT. Unfortunatley mine is over 3 years old the garage quoted me nearly £500 to fix brakes. There was a time when I would have given the garage the go ahead to do the work, but because my car is rapidly losing value, its getting fixed by me!

Hi new to this forum so hello. Only joined because mylocal kept spamming my email box for me to upgrade to a premium listing, not bad for a site that hates spam
Anyway back to the topic I guess this could be said for many goods nowadays not just cars, as someone who has been in the heating and plumbing industry for 20 odd years it use to be the case that a gas boiler would last 20 - 25 years only problem with this is the manufacturers never really made much money on the spares. Nowadays the cost of a gas boiler is reletively cheap, the same can be said for televisions and all white goods in a throwaway society. Manufacturers know that within a period of say 3 - 5 years the product will breakdown and will then be able to recoup there investment on the repair costs and spares. Last year I was at a well known boiler manufacturers head office where they proudly announced that they purchased all their printed circuit boards from China @50p each and proudly sold them to the retail outlets @£140. Personally I think if you get 5 years use out of anything nowadays you've had a bit of a bargain..

Default Old boilers

A bit like cars, just as well they need replaced, the newer ones are more fuel efficient

The way cars are manufactured these days, it's almost impossible to carry out any repairs yourself. Even changing a light bulb can end up being a major mission.

Default Light bulb on a Citroen Relay van

Just had to change my bulb on the drivers side. Have to take the water filler bottle out first, and still have to be double jointed to get to the bulb holder. Then find it is held in with a wire clip that you need fingers like pliers to remove. Finally after getting the old bulb out, you find it will only reassembe in one direction, if you took the time to look at the way the bulb was located as you extracted it. (I didn't look, it took me around 30 mins to put it back together)
