typical!
The only way I could get the tax payer to pay for my drunken binges was to join the forces ![]() Plus the added benefit that they send you to lots of exotic places to expand your true drinking potential!

What would you rather do with her?
I can't imagine she'd be capable of any job in that state. I certainly can't imagine anyone here hiring her even for a menial role. Remploy research shows that 69% of SMEs admit to being unlikely to hire someone with mental health issues. So she can't earn her own money. Leaving people who are incapable of looking after themselves to die in the streets isn't something we do any more, at least not officially. Locking her up in prison for detox would be an option, except that she would have to commit an actual crime first... keeping her in prison would cost more than £7kpa and as soon as she was out she would probably go straight to the pub. Locking people up just for being unable to work to support themselves is another one of those things that we don't do any more. Locking her up in a mental health unit for detox would be an option, but again it would cost more than £7kpa, and I suspect would start a merry-go-round of go in, get detoxed, get pushed into the outside world, be unable to secure a job because every interviewer says "so what have you been doing up until now?", get depressed at constant rejection and grab the bottle again, resume full-blown alcoholism, get referred back to the detox unit, etc. We could, of course, try and provide proper long-term treatment to try and keep her away from that pattern and properly break the cycle... However, the amount of money and resources it would cost for the NHS to provide an effective long-term residential detox programme, followed by residential psychiatric therapy to help her sort out the issues which drove her to this level of alcoholism at such a young age in the first place, and to then provide appropriate outpatient aftercare for as long as it takes, teach her how to participate in the world, offer the resources to help her be strong and resist when she is tempted to start drinking again... well, I suspect it would take many years and would come in at much, much, much more than £7k per annum. As it is, £7kpa in benefits is probably the cheapest option. Much of that £7k probably gets spent on feeding her addiction and is helping her to hasten her way to the grave, so not to worry, eh? She'll stop being a burden on your purse soon enough. |

Mary, you so put a smile on my face. I'd love a beer with you to put the world to rights. I have this configged to come into my outlook inbox, I read two lines and I know the post emanates from you.
It is so rare for me to ever consider being a fan to someone else. There, must be because the grandchildren arrived - today that has made me spout out and out honesty. Mike |

Its not really down to the people who find they cant live without alcohol, or a gamble, or drugs or many other things that no doubt you lot could come up with. But these things have been classed as an ilness. what defines that, its not for me to say. So they should be treated. And no they cant work, health and safety issues and trust in the work place come to mind.
What has caused this, is society, and the greed for money. Thats not to say thats wrong as it employs loyal staff and helps them to support their famalies and the likes. Alcohol, 3 litres white cider for £1.99 at 7% proof. the countless number of gaming and gambling sites, betting shops. 5 betting shops in 800 square yards where i work. Online bingo and gambling have exploded Drugs we all know about. So people have a better will that others, I like a beer every night. and control it. I didnt before i met my new partner, it was out of control. so breweries, gambling organisations have to play some part in this, as well as shop keepers, bookmakers. gambling sites, all those sort of things. But the bottom line is they wont because they make big money. and government wont, because of big taxes they get back from these activities. sean
