Default France and British military co-operation...ish

I love this story from the BBC, it's the way it's worded.

"Britain and France are being forced by budget cut-backs and the lack of their own strategic capability to co-operate more closely on defence.

They both want to be global players but increasingly lack the resources to remain so."

So the only reason we're co-operating isn't out of mutual respect and natural alliance, it's because we've run out of dosh, so need to do a deal with the frogs

This is my favourite bit
"...One new idea is to pool resources on the testing of nuclear warheads..."

Technology for this will be developed in Britain and testing will be done in France."

Ok, so its technical testing, and not blowing them up, but made me chuckle

Old Nelson would turn in his grave...

I suspect it may also be that as the world shrinks and weapons grow, France and England are forced to accept their proximity.

I don't have a great grounding in military history but as I understand it, just a century ago you basically had to be within visual range of each other to have a meaningful fight, using swords and guns and cannons and trebuchets (I did tell you my military history was ropey, right?). Civilians 10 miles up the road would be feeling the economic effects of their country being at war but were unlikely to be hit by shrapnel at that distance.

Whereas if we were attempt to nuke France off the face of the planet, the south-east of England could well suffer fallout, and vice versa.

Unlike India and Pakistan who have sabre rattled their nukes at each other in the past

Theres a scary thought! At least it's a good source of revenue for our arms industry, every cloud...

well the British ones will be stuck in the depot, because they'll have the wrong air filters for French Soil, so will require a £50 million refit, and the French ones will be blockading the road, as they will have gone on strike in support of the farmers, dock workers, fish mongers, candlestick makers...

Let's not forget that before the start of the Kosovo campaign, it was a French Colonel who gave notice to the Serbians that they was about to be bombed!!!

If we are going to share our military with the French, what about our intelligence.

That was a bump and a half

Well I don't think that's too much of an issue, both UK military intelligence laptops have probably been lost in the back of taxis.

My favorite story from Kosovo though was about the Russian troops deployed there, who hadn't been paid for months, and were having to forage for food and steal chickens. Not exactly Tom Clancy is it?
