"The UK was the "junior partner" in the allied World War II fight against Germany in 1940."

Junior partner?!

That's putting it lightly, we thrashed them upside down & backwards.. Twice.

Have to say, Cameron isn't the smartest trick in the book but he's a whole lot better then a certain Mr. Brown.

I'm sure there wont be too much trouble over something like this, alot of people have matured and gotten over the whole WWII thing. Honour the people that lost their lives for their country (no matter which country!) and get on with the Peace.

I was going to say where were his advisors but what kind of education did he have to lead him to that conclusion did he get that opinion at Oxford?

Wink I love a bit of history :)

Its been an interesting topic, that got slated across several forums.

Although I'm not a fan of Cameron, I think to be fair it was genuine historical gaff with the dates, as he was implying after 1941 when the US entered the war, we became a junior partner.

Which is a bitter pill to swallow, but don't forget at the point, until mid 1941, the British Empire and Commonwealth forces had been fighting virtually alone, and we were economically and materially on our knees. The US, although not wanting to commit to what they saw as a European conflict, had been providing equipment and supplies, but once they finally entered the war, their oil reserves and manafacturing capability far exceeded our own.

But, as any historical buff will tell you, the whole argument is actually irrelevant, as both the UK and the US were junior partners in comparison to the USSR, which bore the brunt of the German war machine. After a slow start, once the USSR war machine picked up pace, the historical argument is that the Russians could have quite happily rolled right across Europe, and the Sicily and Normandy US/UK invasions were a side show in comparison.

Churchill himself foresaw this threat and pleaded with Rooselvelt to land an invasion force in the Balkans, not France, to stop Russian post war domination across Eastern Europe. Rooselvelt allegedly didn't want to upset his Russian allies, which was a shaky relationship at the best of times.

The Nazi regime was in decline from 1943, with heavy losses against the Russains, other axis partners suing for peace, and dwindling reserves of manpower and oil.

So on reflection, Cameron was actually right, we were a junior partner, the senior being the USSR after the German invasion, although ally was a very loose term

So hows that for a bit of controversy

Oh my sjr, you actually make a very good point.!!

You're such a stirrer!haha

/commence controversy

The USSR did play a major role in it all, they suffered losses like any other nation, I can understand why they were bitter towards the other parties involved though.

well i think he still made a gaff over the date, and what with the Iran thing and Pakistan do you think its just teething troubles and that he has to remember the press will be waiting for more now.

Or is he going to be a lighter version of the Duke of Gaffs

In my opinion it sounded like he's trying to get off the topics that actually matter?
I'm not sure though, sometimes I don't understand what they are talking about, as i'm pretty young, all the political lingo makes no sense to me at all
