After the latest tragic incident (BBC News - Major manhunt for Afghan who killed British soldiers) I wonder what our revised strategy is, or even if there is one.
Military chiefs said last year they could see UK forces in place for 10 years, politicians are hiding under the table, Obama the liberal has declared US troops will start withdrawing next year, and Afghan troops we are training continue to get inflitrated by the Taliban and turn on us. Meanwhile the Taliban are relaxed in the knowledge that political pressure will eventually remove foreign troops, and the long tragic history of Afghanistan and any lessons from previous conflicts seems to have been forgotten. How on earth can we get ourselves out of this mess, balanced with the needs of the Afghan population, preventing a civil war, letting our own brave forces die for a conflict few people understand. On top of this, we have the financial drain of an overseas expensive military campaign, at a time when cuts are being made to basic services back home. No answers, only the same questions, and the assurance of similar tragic headlines in the days, weeks and months to come. Whatever happens, I guess someone loses. Oh to be a politician and carrying the weight of this responsibility.

From my perspective, i cant see why we are there at all, i understood from my education that soldiers and the armed forces generally were ther to protect our country from war, and outside influences causing damage etc etc, what happened in the case of the london bombers, where were our tropps deployed, not here where they were needed but out there fighting a war that no one quite understands and everywhere else in the world it seems. bring our boys back and help protect our shores, dont send em abroad and leave doors open for the baddies top come here.
Politicians seem to have a lot of blinkers on these days. rant over and i probably have not come accross as i would have liked but i dont like paying my taxes to help other countries that dont want us there at all.

I totally agree mate, they don't want us there, there's no decent reason to be there, our troops should be back home, protecting us incase they try to come Here!
Especially since I read another post about the £20 Billion bill the Ministry of Defense has to take into it's budget... we need all the help we can get? Justsayin. Personally I've had more meaningful conversations here then I've seen politicians having and I haven't even been a member that long. Then again it's a really great forum

It's true they do need help, but to be fair, it should be their own government doing it in my opinion.
It's all good to help out for the good of the people, charities for example, they may not all be as genuine as they appear but they help out. I would personally like to hear from someone living in Afghanistan, under the rule of the Taliban, their honest opinions would maybe change our minds alltogether when considering if they need our help or not.
