Default Why sellers sell stuff at x9.9?

For a long time, i have been thinking about why sellers sell stuff at $x9 or $x9.9? we may discuss about this? Is it a marketing strategy? if so, why they sell at $x9 or $x9.9? Why dont they sell at a whole number? i really can not figure it out even i exchanged my ideas with my classmates, colleagues.

It sounds cheaper. In fact it is cheaper.

Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves (or so I was always told)!!

Yup age old marketing technique that taps into our sub conscious, £9.99 sounds so much cheaper than £10

Default Seems like 9

Well it seems somehow to be nine and a bit rather than 10.

Consumers and humans in general are not sensible like machines LOL

The point is that we think £9.9 is much more cheaper than £10, although it is not that cheap, i think. But people would like to get some change, lol

Exactly as everyone else has said above - as we very often act on instinct, seeing "£9.99" makes us think that the item is a lot cheaper "£10.00", when the reality is you're only saving a penny.

It's the same as those offers you see in supermarkets, such as "buy two for £2" - you instantly think it's a great deal, but when you look at the individual costs, you might only be saving a few pennies.

Sure, the pennies will soon add up, but these techniques are simply tried and tested ways of marketing.

I tend to get moaned at for not paying attention when in the supermarket, but since the prices have been going up, it is a bit of a wake up call. I spotted some washing powder in Tescos that worked out cheaper to buy two smaller boxes, which combined worked out as much better value than one large "family value" box.

But its all clever marketing and suckered me for long enough. I think its just been programmed into us over the years from countless cheesy TV adverts. Same goes for 9.99 instead of 10.00

The smallest things like the £0.01 less, makes the biggest difference on how the price range sounds because £999.99 can then be called 'under a thousand pounds!' see how that sounds?

Hmm, thinking about it....
