Default Social Network Traffic Generation

Hi Guys,

I've seen a lot of businesses set up facebook page then display the social plugin on their site and have anything from dozens of 'likes' to hundreds and even thousands.

I was just wondering how effective is this in terms of creating long-term sustainable traffic and user base for a site?

And what level of repeat traffic do you get (daily visitor per 100 fan/follower)?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

I find the whole facebook strategy fascinating as there are so many different opinions.

Me personally, I don't think the actual FB fan page actually achieves too much, likewise its Google counterpart. Most of the traffic we get comes from posts or links on peoples walls.

It's just yet another thing that will never get updated, like neglected blogs...

But having the like button on your site is powerful. We average about 600- 700 likes per month on our UK directory, so that maybe 700 exit points, but also means 700 people are advertising us on their walls.

Looking at our analytics, in the last 30 days, we had 1,697 visitors from Facebook, of which GA reports 82.26% as new visits.

So we get a lot more traffic from FB than we send. It may not be a huge amount of traffic compared to a search engine, but for the sake of having a line of code on your pages, it's worth it

I think it depends on the site, you always see articles posted on the news feed from when someone has read it, and if it has a fascinating head line it encourages more people to click and read it, it just comes down to having useful information on your website I suppose.

It seems to work for a lot of event organisers, they encourage you to like their page so you can view the photos from which ever event you went to, then they start posting up and coming events on the news feed, to advertise the event, free advertising

Site owners put facebook and twitter social plugins at their sites for at least two reasons:
- Collect their personal database of loyal auditory for advertising.
- Improve trust to the site. Client will trust more to the site, there is a facebook plugin with 1k fans.

The problem I found with Facebook is, is that everyone I quite happily left beyond in another world 30 odd years ago found me. After attending countless reunions during the summer 2 years ago. The reasons I left them all in the first place soon became even more apparent. Eventually I ended up parting company with the site

lol, brilliant, but that's why you create a completely separate account for your business

Also saves you spamming your "friends" with any commercial stuff, or stops one of your old "friends" putting saucy stories about your distant past onto your business page Ahem, well normally...

I have been tickering with the idea of getting a professional Facebook page done, just need convincing that any financial outlay I may make, will fill my bank account with wads of cash
