Question Social Networking for Business - is it worth it?

It's interesting seeing on various forums and blogs the amount of time business owners put into to developing Facebook fan pages, tweeting etc and the amount of stressing that goes on when these don't return obvious results.

Are we all getting too hung up certain aspects of social networking, and is it becoming an increasing burden on your daily time management?

Or do you think you have the balance about right and are happy with the results social networking brings?

I think social networking can help, depending on what sort of business you're in. I've used Twitter to generate some sales, although I think Facebook only works well for certain size/type of companies.

I certainly wouldn't spend too much time on it though.

I think social networking can be a big help to your business if done right, if you do it badly it can have a big impact and maybe even damage your business.

Social Networking is a long term plan, the results come over time, recommend that you do not spend hours on it, you do need to work as well.

Creating Facebook fan-page is not enough, expanding network, keeping in touch with them and give all that they want to see on your business page.

Its a long hard slog to get anywhere - I've been working as a webmaster for more than 7 years and I don't get much success in this area. So I can only imagine what its like for a newbie.
