SEO versus SEM? Whats the difference?

Hi Friends,

SEO vs SEM. SEO means Search engine optimization to the process of configuring or optimizing your website with the appropriate Keywords to associated with, in a manner that will make it easily "seen" by search engines.

Search Engine Optimization is the process of increasing a web site’s rank and the amount of quality traffic sent to it via the organic search results of a search engine for specific keywords by optimizing various elements of each web page within a site.

Search Engine Marketing is the process of researching and positioning a web site within search engines to achieve maximum exposure. A SEM campaign includes SEO, paid inclusion, pay-per-click, and other related services that will increase qualified traffic to your web site.

Link Building put in SEO.SEO and link building strategies I have found that with all the information readily available, very little of it is actually revealing in any real way.

In my opinion SEO is on page optimizer and SEM is off page,

Correct me if I am not understanding

SEO: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will enable you to grow organically (naturally) and through consistent and methodical application of SEO Services you will be listed on the first page (industry dependent). The benefit of Organic Search Engine Ranking is the fact that you will be listed for Free, and potentially receiving thousands if not millions of visitors to your website at no cost to you.

SEM: Search Engine Marketing (SEM) will enable you to dominate the search engines immediately, but at a high cost. The most effective way is PPC (Pay Per Click) e.g. through the Google Ad words program which enables you to bid on keywords you would like to be listed for. Depending on the competitiveness of the keyword you would need to match a similar bid as others in order to get the first page and position ranking for your website.

SEO is the Subset of SEM

There always will be a clash between them both although both are very important and link building some people might thing might not be needed for one you would be very wrong.

You might think by creating say some SEM content and publishing it that the job is done it will help your company! WRONG how will people find this article or useful text if you don’t show it off and link it to other forums or websites or even more articles?

A good way to think of it is if you can’t easily find it how will your customers? I did some work recently primarily SEM on a Bespoke Engineering project and the SEM work I carried out saw them top for a keyword but not there direct website it was an article I wrote and then linked to from various other articles and forums.

So if your asking where link building falls it would have to fall into both as you need it for both parts weather that maybe SEM or SEO you will still require Link building in both and this will be the case for coming years.
