A subject close to my heart, the SEO use of business listings, but an interesting take:
"SEO activities are often divided into on-page SEO, which focus on the client’s corporate website, and off-page SEO, which also contributes to rankings for the client’s website. Directory listings are approached as part of the link-building strategy, which is classified as off-page SEO. When selling off-page SEO activities like link-building, an SEO company may also tell the client that each directory and link is also a way the customer can find the client online. This may be becoming more and more important with developments across the search landscape like personalization and real-time social media listings. There seems to be a multitude of highly visible directories cropping up, too. Google Places is just one major directory of businesses that profiles businesses without their input. And then returns those listings in search results." SEO that’s not really SEO | site-reference.com
