Wink Building quality links to your site - from the Google God himself...

The Official Google Blog has recently done an interesting article on link building.

To be honest it's nothing new, but it does reinforce old messages.

Links to your site are the currency of respectability, and they will positively influence your position in Googles index, hence the ongoing debate on the best way to get these.

But as Google say, it's all about content. Create good content that people find interesting, then they will want to link to you.

Then there are social networking sites, professional business directories, blogs etc.

Steer clear of paid links, ie you pay to appear in the text of someones home page, or spammy business directories (more often called web directories).

These tend to be unmoderated scripted directories that list you with unrelated businesses and will do you nothing but harm. See an advert like:
list with 200 directories for $50 then run a mile!

Anyone new to the world of link building, then this is a useful reference.

Fresh quality content is the key. It requires a lot of time investment. It does pay.

does the same Google logic apply to blog websites? I am just creating my own blog website and naturally would like to be found so I would be linking with other sites with complimenting material.

You linking to another site is not a problem, and is good for the othersite. You linking to the othersite and it linking back to you, (reciprocal) although not bad, offers little value.

The theory, and ideal world stuff, you write an entertaining/informative blog, I stumble across it, and think superb, I must tell people about this and link to you. This scenario is then replicated again and again...

In reality, you write a well crafted informative blog, and then market it, forum posts, newsletter, digg, facebook etc etc, and try and generate links that way.

Good post Steve,

One thing to note, is to use anchortext links as much as possible when getting backlinks. It can make a big difference, as it gives Google relevant information about your website.
