Thank you for the welcome.

Business going really well with plenty of opportunities to assist in local areas. I suppose in my opinion because I have worked in regulated work since the GISC and then the FSA regulations it has sort of second nature and really the new regulations havent had any impact on me personally.

They are there to dictate the way we look after and care for our customers and that ties up nicely with the sort of person I am.

I suppose to cement your opinion Pre GISC was pretty much an uneven playing field and I think that these new regs have levelled it off for all companies to make it fairer to trade!

Hmm have to disagree to a certain extent - i always delivered a good customer service (ok its pompous but true lol) and i had clients that followed me around for my 17 years I was in the business when i moved from company to company.

Margins were tight on commissions so i always put a fee on premiums to cover my time away from the office giving a personal service to those customers who needed that TLC, help with proposal and claim forms. (I was proud to be one of the first brokers on scene after the tornado struck Birmingham all those years ago). They didnt know always that their premium included a fee, but they accepted the total premium i quoted, they had the option to buy cheaper but chose not to.

Do you go into Sainsburys and ask how much profit they make on a can of beans? Is it right that FSA dictate you have to disclose how much you are charging - i personally whole heartily disagree.

I was forced to take exams to prove i knew what i was talking about after doing the job for 15 years, sadly after 2 years and several exams later i decided it was no longer for me , fortunately i landed on my feet and love the job im doing now and i dont look back

Hi Clive,

Did not mean to offend in any way.

What I was trying to say is that I never really ventured too much into the world before GISC came into play and so the changes only happened when I was pretty inexperienced and didnt really have a lot to change to make sure that I was compliant.
I do know alot of people who have been broking 'back in the good old days' as they say where you would do most deals over a pint and a pie in the local and it was more a handshake than a signed prop! And they too are having a terrible time still in making sure that they remember everything and in some cases like you say when fee is given instead of or aswell as commission to look into someones eyes and say we have a minimum charge of x and we also get commission of y and then watch them shake their heads is sometimes very daunting but I agree with the 'sainsbury scenario' it would probably be even worse if you asked the local garage how much they put on top for the already inflated price of petrol!!

I think you hit the nail on the head there with your customers following you around, they bought into you and what you did for them and that is pretty much how I work. I may not be the cheapest option every time but like you said I am the better option!

I am glad you are happy doing what it is now and that you have tales to share with everyone on the forum as I in a few years time when they change something else will probably be saying the same thing as you! LOL

Nope not at all offended, sorry if you took it as me having a pop - i was just sounding off at the FSA - my pet hate lol

Dont know how may years you have been doing the job but i started off actually working out quotes from a guide in 1989, we used a pc as an indicator but the job was an art to know that if you were quoting a 17 year old it was Corinthian, 40 sumit with a family salon it was NU (or Aviva now), then EDi came in and i was sent to Misys on a training day - oh could go on for hours about the changes - OMG i sound old

Our office insurance is due later in the year - more than welcome to give me a quote for that if you are interested - currently with Allianz (wasnt that Cornhill? ahh more changes)

Right im off to do some work before i go on more about my previous role lol

Have a good day
