That's understandable enough... I more meant, how does a personal interest in one's own family tree evolve into developing and running a full-on resource centre for others?

Just a sideways move. Along with checking the family medical history, I used to transcribe Cornish parish registers and wanted to sell them, so in 2002, I launched a 'shop in a box'. People asked if they could sell their products too and the snowball started rolling.

Hi Pamela

Welcome to the forums

I don't know much about my family history.. where do you get the information from? Do previous family members have to had made a log of their family tree in the past? Or how do you do it :O /curious.

You just start with what you know; details from your birth certificate will give you your parents. Get their details, (marriage and births) and from there, your grandparents, etc. You can track everyone back to 1837 with certificates. Once you are pre 1837, you will need parish records and census details, etc.

There is lots of advice on how to trace your family tree on the British Genealogy site and lots of help on the British Genealogy forum, both of which are entirely free to use.

Be warned that once started, family history is very addictive!
