Hi

As an ex insurance broker your in the right area

Best advice is to use a local broker, they will ask you a bunch of questions and then go off & do the leg work for you, be careful they dont add too many fees though, you will probably get a Terms of Business letter listing these though.

Let me know how you get on

Default Insurer for Employers Liability Insurance

My recommendation would be to consult an independent insurance broker. The most suitable insurer for your needs would be dependant on many factors including the type of business you are, the number of employees, the type of premises you work on, whether you work at height, use heat away from your own premises or do any other high risk work etc. etc.
I have come across many people that have taken out business insurance online and quite frankly, most of the time it is done incorrectly - which you usually only find out after the event.
I would also recommend that the insurance company you use is authorised and regulated within the UK.

I agree with both arguments here - we are an independent intermediary and we offer the whole of the market solutions and although online companies are out there as stated previously you dont always get the right cover. They generally have drop-down boxes for occupations and if you dont quite fit and you put the nearest match you may struggle to get the correct product without speaking to the 'call centre staff' at the other end which in all instances is what you would do once with a local broker. Although if you are a bricklayer and that is all you do, then online companies can do provide figures swiftly and will suffice your contract.
Also if you have multiple jobs or even had any claims the online systems cannot cope with these functions and ultimately will not provide a quotation..
