Another heavyweight name tumbles into bankruptcy

"Eastman Kodak, the company that invented the hand-held camera, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The move gives the company time to reorganise itself without facing its creditors"

Such a long and rich history, littered with milestones and innovation. I really hope it manages to pull it off, but with effectively a $1bn overdraft and a shrinking business, I wouldn't be like to place a bet

Ah no, I hope they get through this. I can remember kodak from my childhood. First ever camera was a kodak. Even when I got a new one n the 90's it had rolls and not that huge cartridge.

I'm holding thumbs for them. They deserve to pull through this.

Exactly, Kodak has been with us since childhood. There was even a time when there was only one brand for cameras and that was Kodak though Canon was there since a long time but was not as reputed.

Fingers are crossed for the best.

I find it absolutely incredible that Kodac had and passed up the opportunity to get into the digitial photography market early. They didnt want to develop digital photography because they thought it threatened the film side of their business. What a massive mistake that was!! Its all about staying relevant in an ever changing world and not trying to grab onto what made you successful yesterday!

over the last 15 years, their market cap went from $30bn to mere $150mn... ouch!

they never tried to innovate beyond cameras and that's the root of their problem... cameras have become phones or phones have become cameras, whichever way you want to look at it...

I can't believe they will be gone.

Like other posters here they provided my very first camera and were a name to be trusted.

What amazes me the most is that their decline has been so slow. I can understand a business that struggles because of short term changes in the marketplace, but surely someone at Kodak must have noticed they were leaking market share over the past 15 years!!!!

Big company syndrome? Complacency? Poor management? How many times have we seen large companies and house hold names collapse in the last few years.

Are some of these big companies just too big, too inefficient and too slow to change direction? With all the information and reports at his fingertips, why can't the man at the helm not see whats going on?

Does make you wonder...
