Theo makes some interesting comments - yes we are in for an election but personally speaking Politicians seem as bad as each other - they all promise us something to get our vote but that seems to disappear when they are in power - but as I cant be bothered to vote half the time I cant complain who is in power.

Interest rates and VAT could go up again but when, is that a reason for not starting a business - again personally speaking the reduced VAT rate recently didnt curb or encourage my spending pattern. I was amused when the High Street stores were pronouncing pre vat increase prices - ok im off to buy my new laptop now because i save £12.50 if i spend £500 before Jan 1st - are the public that blind to such a small saving - is that really going to be a decisive factor in such a major purchase?

One other thing - how many companies kept the VAT reduction to themselves despite "requests" from Mr Brown for them not to do so, I know my satnav company that I subscribe to increased their rates by 2.5% rather than pass on the savings -ok again im talking pennies here so im not that bothered but that wasnt the Governments intention.

Sorry Stavros, kinda hijacked your thread a touch, its linked to the original story though, well kind of

Right no doubt im going to get shot down in flames over my comments - im off to the shops to buy myself something nice - yes at 17.5% vat lol

very interesting, but quite worrying. I hope VAT doesn't go up to 20% I'm not planning on becoming VAT registered to start with, and any big rise will make me more expensive to my clients.

Maybe Theo is right, and I should hold fire for a bit. I'm in no major hurry as I'm still working, but its quite daunting trying to decide when to go for it

Wont your competition be just as expensive though as their VAT will also increase?
