What are trackbacks?

In my introduction message I did say there may be some silly questions! Sorry

Can I ask what trackbacks is... when i post a message it says "send trackbacks to" then insert url.

Just finding my way around this site.

Trackbacks are just an automated way of letting you know if someone links to your post.
