Default Domain name has ended up in a mailing list

We bought a domain name for another new website a couple of months back. Almost straight after and ever since, we have continued to be sent loads of unsolicited marketing emails. I suppose we could always delete the info@ and set up something else and that would end the problem.

Its odd that just this one has been picked up and used in this way its almost like its been sold in a list as we get them almost every single day from loads of places and a lot are repeats too. Anyone else had this problem? It started within a week of registration.

You're probably just a victim of a spammer harvesting domain names and then targetting commonly used addresses (ie: info@, sales@) on those domains.

You may want to consider removing the info@ address and changing the catch all to something like enquiry@ or enquiries@.

It won't prevent the spammers from bombarding you as with the info@ address deleted, mail addressed to info@ will be delivered to your new catch-all address.

However, if you're using domain level spam filtering with your host, you might be able to filter this out. It would really depend on your host package and the tools they provide you.

Agree, its going be down to the quality of anti spam tools you or your hoster is using.

We use Symantec Premium Anti spam on our exchange server and it blocks most of it. I was late renewing the license last year, so it stopped working for a few days and we were buried with spam

Curse of the internet age

Hiya,
Its just this one domain so I dont think it can be linked to who hosts the domain. All others are OK never had this problem before. I think we will delete the info@ so their mail bounces back to them and we can use something else. Its new so its not a problem.

One other thought, also depends what you have been doing. Some unscrupulous web directories, biz directories or other advertising sites can flog your details to mailing lists.

Assume you haven't got it displayed in the clear on your site, a quick and sure way to get harvested.

It might be, so I will check on that point. But a lot of the emails seem related. They seem to think it is for a hotel or guest house given the content of the mailings we get and the name 'house' is in the domain name. Its not just any old spam thats why we think weve been stuck on a sold mailing list because it seems (to them) to be relevant, but far from it.
