Unhappy Facebook Like Button declared illegal

Well I missed this story when it broke back in August.

It seems the FB like button and other similar social media buttons have been declared illegal in Germany!

"The Data Protection Commissioner’s Office (ULD) calls on all institutions in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany to shut down their fan pages on Facebook and remove social plug-ins such as the “like”-button from their websites. After a thorough legal and technical analysis ULD comes to the conclusion that such features are in violation of the German Telemedia Act and of the Federal Data Protection Act, respectively the Data Protection Act of Schleswig-Holstein."

So tommy, for you the facebook likes are over...

I wonder if Germany will be alone in this action or if other countries will follow?

If this happens on other countries, it will change a lot of things. As it is, it's a way to measure how popular a Fan Page or business page is but if it comes to happen elsewhere, other such buttons will come in its place. Take the Subscribe button for example, it is a lot like the Twitter Follow and if Twitter business pages can survive without a Like button, I guess so will Facebook.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this plays out. The "like" button is something that I'm sure many users in different countries do not want to see taken away.

How so? It has been a while since I read about this as well, so maybe Germany was on it own with this?

I don't understand lol, All I asked was why you said "I don't think so" There were a few opinions expressed here, and I was not sure which one you objected to. So how can you not agree?

Has the facebook button been declared illegal in your country, or others? So far the only one I have heard of was Germany, and it was a while before this thread was created. You can agree with the post or disagree, its up to you, but what had me curious was why. Which is what I asked. Why you didn't agree.
