Yep, back in the 1990's it was known as cyber squatting, with teams literally trawing industrial estates looking for names to register, then sell to the established businesses who were making there first tentative steps into the online world. Proper pioneer stuff and a great example of technology and society moving faster than legislation.
As with all things, the window of opportunity closed, and an established company can now claim rights over a particular name, as can celebs or other well known people or brands.
This had led to some larger companies abusing this, claiming similar names etc, but most of it these days is commonsense.
If your happen to spot Tesco.com for sale, the chances "are every little helps" will grab it off you in the court room
