Default Domain names back when it all started

Thinking abstractly as you do on occasions, I wonder if somebody could clear up a nagging conundrum for me. I seem to remember back when all this www malarkey started there was a band of get rich quick entrepreneurs that registered all the well known names such as 'Asda, Tesco, Argos' and so-on.

They then in turn managed to receive vast sums of money to sell these domain names back to the original company.

Is this true or just another urban myth?

Ta very

Mike

Not sure on specific domains, but yes, very true, a domain is EXTREMELY important, and getting it right is key.Business.com sold for $7.5 million according to G Book of Records.

Yep, back in the 1990's it was known as cyber squatting, with teams literally trawing industrial estates looking for names to register, then sell to the established businesses who were making there first tentative steps into the online world. Proper pioneer stuff and a great example of technology and society moving faster than legislation.

As with all things, the window of opportunity closed, and an established company can now claim rights over a particular name, as can celebs or other well known people or brands.

This had led to some larger companies abusing this, claiming similar names etc, but most of it these days is commonsense.

If your happen to spot Tesco.com for sale, the chances "are every little helps" will grab it off you in the court room
