I think it depends really on how you intend to grow the site, are you looking for worldwide traffic, or having multiple sites servicing different countries?
Me personally, I've gone for the indvidual country extension, ie .us and .co.uk as different sites have different content depending on Country. This also tells google straight away where your site is geographically, so helps to get pages indexed. If you just want a single site with worldwide traffic, then go for a .com Or you can sub domain it, good example is big blue, eg IBM - United Kingdom IBM - France Added advantage of subdomaining means you don't have to buy up all the domains, and keeps costs down!

lol, love the avatar stavros!!
As Kip says, bag it now! Time wise, I normally go for 2 years, as the registrar I use normally has 2 year deals, but upto you. I tend to collect them, so getting to the point now where 2 years ones have been sat unused, I'm letting them expire

I hear you Steve, I have relatively few for someone in my profession, I think about 33, and If I could freeze time they would all have amazing sites on them, but I cant I am afraid.
Best advice here Stavros, only buy what you now you can dedicate time to, otherwise they will just be lost in the ether, and remember to think of spelling mistakes or growth, so grab the sites that sound like the ones you are looking to purchase: Examples, usaprint.com usaprints.com usaprinted.com usaprinter.com etc etc, am sure you get my drift. Twitter.co.uk is owned by a chap that could be making a whole lot more from it! But doesn't, instead he makes money for Charity with it. |

I like subdomains, I do not know why, but they work.
I would also revert to an earlier post in this thread, at a few dollars a domain, it is worth spending out and ensuring you have all of the ones bought up front. I have the US and the Aussie domains ready for a project I am trialling in the UK, and it will be a few years before I even think about going elsewhere with them, but the important thing was making sure I had them. |
