According to a Forrester report, 86 per cent of 4559 people who took part in a survey were happy with Windows 7.
But 43 per cent of respondents still using Windows XP said they could see no reason to upgrade to Windows 7. "The biggest competitor to Windows 7 isn't the Mac," said the report. "It's Windows XP."

After reluctantly moving to Vista when I got my new laptop, I do miss XP.
With 4GB RAM, I think it would fly under XP, instead it slowly memory leaks under Vista. That said, beginning to think IE8 is buggy and a mem hog, so may be time to go to firefox ![]() Heard good things about Win 7, never been a great fan of Mac's (used to support them years ago). If XP still works, and its a biz machine, can see no reason at all to upgrade at the moment. Likewise, all our office servers still run Win2003, and prob will for another couple of years yet

I'm still using XP - and intend to leap frog over Vista without ever using it (beyond the occasional public terminal, etc).
![]() My wife moved up to Windows 7 when it came out. While I haven't played around with much, it seems to be decent. But, for now - am waiting for laptops to become commonly available with USB 3.0 ports before pulling the trigger on a purchase. |

Well an interesting conversation , but i have to say i am a mac man , they do have their share if irritations but i just love them . I use coda for all my coding requirements it is soooooo slick for me ... they just work .. i know others though that hate them !! i guess it is all boils down to how you use your computer as to which one will suite you .

Its quite funny, it used to be windows versus Mac, and if you were a sandal/toga wearing web developer, then the Mac was your weapon of choice.
![]() But Macs are now getting pretty main stream audiences, which can only be boosted by the iPad. Where as the windows crowd has turned in on itself, as product delays mean a daft very short timespan before operating system releases, which in hindsight, appears to back fired making Vista still born, and a lot of us windows people very unimpressed. With googles own effort, and Apple growing, it will be interesting to see if the O/S landscape changes over the next 5 - 10 years, or if MS starts listening to some of the criticism, and windows 7 turns out to be the new XP.

Google OS may be the landscape of the future. if the rumours are to be believed Google are going to offer a free version that displays ad sense on the desktop\sidebar and a corporate version which will be highly subsidised.
if the OS is any good how are MS going to compete in the retail sector. |

I have been following this thread and I am surprised no one has yet mentioned Linux.
For several years I experimented with many operating systems, yes believe it or not there are actually several viable alternatives to Windoze out there besides the Mac. After trying OS's such as OS2, Sun Microsystem's Solaris and several versions of Linux, I have now been using Linux Ubuntu for the last several years. The reason being, it does everything Windoze can do and a whole lot more - and it can be had for free - legally! It comes with a full office suite which is pretty much a button-for-button replacement of MS Office; it uses Firefox as its default web browser, and it has literally thousands of very useful programmes which can be obtained for free. The latest version, Ubuntu 10.04 was released only a few weeks ago and is arguably as good as if not better than the latest offering from MS. It is well worth looking into, you can easily install it on the same system as Windows for a permanent installation, or you can run it within windows to trial it. |
