Default Touch screens

Inbetween client visits today I had an hour to kill so popped in Staples an Comet. I was amazed at the touch screen HP computer. Everything all in one box, no tower, nothing external aside from a small keyboard. £769 so more like eye-candy right now but I did like the ease of use.

I think MAC may have pioneered the technology (not certain really) but it did remind me of Tom Cruise in Minority Report .

Are these going to be the norm?

And will conventional towers be at give-away prices?

Mike

HP, don't they make those windows things built on top of 3.1, 98, 2000, Millenium, XP, Vista, 7 etc etc!

Haha, burn them all!

The all in ones have been around for some time, the mother in laws just scrapped her 5 year old "all in in" Sony Viao for a new shiny Viao laptop.

The touch screen technology is starting to mature and gets better.

Although Macs have a cult following and are renowned by creative types and script kiddies alike, I think the touchscreen was pioneered by PLATO.PLATO (computer system) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Me, I couldn't give a toss about an Operating system, I just want something logical, familar and easy to use. Windows cornered the market, you can pick a PC up for tuppence hapenny, as long as it can get on this interweb doo da thingy, I'm happy.

I'll be even happier when we finally scrap the keyboard and start talking to PC's, (but in a non dodgy IBM Voice reconiton robot kind of way)

Computer, make it so...

Default touch

Touch screens have been around for so long its untrue, even the new ipad isnt a new concept, just that its a newer fresher look and of course a mac and marketed to the ipod generation.
have a look at the panasonic toughbook, its a really robust laptop that you may have seen your gas engineer whip out, they have the standard laptop features, but you can swivil the screen round and close it flat, then just use the screen as a touchpad, no keyboard required.
personlly, touch screen technology has come along way, but still has a lot further to go before we start taking it really seriously.

Several years ago I did a massive project for the govt and I desgined and installed web cafes in a majority of the govt building up and down the uk.

when they first went into they great and everyone played with them then the screens started to go out of sync due the abuse they were recieving so we had to train the on site techs to calibrate them once a week or so.

they also looked like dirty most of the time due to be a high lacquered gloss black finish.

I have played around with windows 7 on a touch screen and I am not convinced that they will replace the old qwerty just yet. but I would consider one for the kitchen where I can display the TV or recipes etc without having to have all the peripherals slung everywhere.

if you have OCD though I would stay away as you will be forever cleaning the finger prints off the screen.

Ah, the march of technology.

I went into Boots today with a little USB stick to print off some photos at their touch-screen terminals.

Ten years ago I would have still been astonished that I could walk into a shop with portable memory the size of a keyring, and without even needing to use a keyboard or a mouse, I could specify half a dozen pictures and print them out to my chosen size and finish within five minutes.

Today I felt sweary at it because the !!!!ing touchscreen was so poorly calibrated and it took a whole five minutes to select and print my pics.
