Angry Symantec AV - why does it get more complicated every year!

January for us is Antivirus renewal month.

For years I've used Norton then Symantec AV. Used to be nice and easy, manage your clients from the Symantec Console, upgrade the agents once a year, maybe once every 2 years.

Then AV became Endpoint Protection, the good old console turned into a crappy web page hosted from a Tomcat install on windows.

Just got my renewal through, and lucky me...

"Dear Symantec Customer,
We are pleased to inform you that as a customer with current maintenance / support for Symantec™ Multi-tier Protection Small Business Edition you are entitled to upgrade free of charge to Symantec™ Protection Suite Small Business Edition 3.0, beginning January 4, 2010. Symantec™ Protection Suite Small Business Edition 3.0 is the successor suite to Symantec™ Multi-tier Protection Small Business Edition..."

Yippee, lucky me. So followed the link in the mail, downloaded a million GB worth of code, went to upgrade the (formely known as Console) Protection Centre - "error can't upgrade from this version. Please do a full unistall of database and then fresh install of new software". ahhhhhhhh....

Great... talk about going backwards....

So its currently uninstalling its 2.5GB database, no doubt it will crash 5 minutes from the end, windows will blow up and I'll spend the next week formatting, installing and restoring from backups...

right.. rant over...

dont worry, your day will come...

Saw a great quote you might like on a Linux forum, slagging off all things windows.

"To mess up a Linux box, you need to work at it; to mess up your Windows box, you just need to work on it. "
