Default Calling all VAT experts

We are about to fulfil a mailing for a charity. It will involve the printing of a personalised appeal letter.

I recall from when we fulfilled a similar mailing for another charity, they gave me a certificate showing that the letter printing (only) was zero VAT.

I have contacted our new client, advising them of this. They have replied saying that they are not registered for VAT, and will have to pay it. Is that right, or can we save them some money?

Yes that is correct you can only charge zero rate vat to vat registered person. However if the printing is an exempt supply which depends on the content, more info on HMRC website, then there will be no VAT to pay or charge.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. We shall be printing the personalised address blocks on the printed letters and there is a donation form on the reverse, so I guess it is all subject to VAT.

Have a nice weekend.

It may help to let the clients know that it may be beneficial for them to register for vat as they will then be able to recover VAT that they pay. If they have a lot of VAT the cost of getting the VAT done may be less than the VAT recovered, so could be in a win win situation.

Just seen your post, sorry for the delay. Our client has already advised me that they are looking to register in the future.

Thank you again for your advice.
