Apparently next weeks Panorama on BBC is about how employers are still abusing the minimum wage. I actually got slated on a plumbing forum the other week. There was a plumber looking for a recently qualified plumber or at least someone with experience, there was no age reference so I assumed it was open to all those who were interested. The requirements were that you had your own van and tools, were willing to travel anywhere in London, be self employed, with the wages being £50 per day. The original poster could not understand why people were not jumping at the job. I knowing that the work involved would require the newbie to be onsite more than 10 hours a day suggested to him that the wages for what was required were very low, considering he has to provide their own van, for the employers use and that the chances are depending on age etc the wages would be below the minimum wage. Although the minimum wage does not cover the self employed, it is another way how employers abuse the system for their own benefit...
