Default Accountants

My previous accountant lost the plot, was getting near to retirement was forgetting what I had already paid in VAT and so I thought it was time to move on. My accountants before him, went into liqidation and I had to go after the directors for the upfront fees I had already paid. The most recent accountant I've employed the services of has left me a bit miffed and that's putting politely. Having had all the relevant paperwork since May, last week he finally got in touch and asked for a couple of missing bank statements before he can submit to companies house, I told him I would contact the bank but as it was an internet bank they would probably take around 2 weeks to send it.
The following day, he decided to call a meeting, returned my cheque and all my paperwork, said he was having sleepless nights and couldn't carry on! As far as I can tell all the paperwork is in orderly fashion, although I have seen another companies VAT return form within my paperwork. Am I just unlucky with accountants? And why is it accountants tend to talk down to you? After all your employing them, not the other way around. By the way these were all so called Chartered accountants... 4 Accountants in the space of a year you couldn't make it up if you wanted to...

Good morning, Barney.

You've certainly had a run of bad luck with your accountants. Are you sorted now, or still looking for someone that will hopefully go the distance?

Afternoon Barney,

Sorry to hear that you have had a what seems to be a run of bad luck with accountants. 4 accountants within one year seems to sound like a bit of a high number.

I think the reason why the accountants you may have dealt with have seemingly talked down to you could be based on miscommunication. A good accountant should be able to communicate effectively to get a point across to the client.

I suggest you visit accounting-help website, head to NEWS and then the article Be Wary When Selecting An Accountant. This article gives you a idea of what to look out for when choosing an accountant. I hope that your luck with accountants changes and that you'll be able to choose one that you can move forward with.

Barney,

To have four accountants in one year is an unwanted record. That is bad luck.

I think over the years I've had 8 Accountants in all, all seemed to have a problem in handing over the paperwork within a reasonable period of time. The only time I seem to get on with them, is at the point of employing them and handing over the fee, thereafter it's down hill..........trying to find one that allows me to pay the least ammount of tax owed would be a dream, tends to be the other way around where I end up paying the max, every new accountant slates the previous accountant by saying they've done a really bad job, as if I haven't got better things to do like running my own business...

What would you consider a reasonable period of time to hand over paper work? Also in what over how many years would you say that you have had these 8 accountants?

I must say it is a bad to hear that you have had so many bad experiences with accountants. I'm not sure how much time you have on you hands but I have put some links in for you to read pertaining to the sort of things you should look out for when it comes to accountants. I'm sure you may have some sort of idea what to for considering the number of accountants that you have dealt with but I hope that you find this useful and helps you in future.

Barney, you do seem to have had a bad run with accountants! A lot of accountants nowadays offer a guarantee to complete work within a set time space. We aim to complete all accounts within 4 weeks of receiving all the records.

I hope that you have better luck in the future, normally one of best ways of choosing an accountant is via a recommendation from a friend or business peer.

Well the recent / ex Accountant had all the relevant paperwork since May, I forwarded to him the access codes given by the VAT & HMRC, he had all this information, all the information from the previous accountant was also given to him within a week of me contracting him. We then get to mid August for him to request a bank statement for 2009 which he wants me to provide within 48hrs!
I explained to him that as the Bank of Scotland is internet based they would probably take around 10 days to provide this, following day he say's he quits In the meantime leaving me liable for fines for late submissions you couldn't make it up and totally unprofessional.

I can quite easily recommend a good accountant. I have no financial motive and I am not an accountant. If you need any recommendations let me know.
